Riverview HS C Phillips signs with St John’s River State
Recruit Look’s Jordan Phillips from Riverview HS (FL), who is also a rare left-handed catcher, signed her letter of intent today with St. John’s River State College. She has a 5.3 GPA who is also graduating HS with college credits completed before she steps foot on the Palatka, FL campus.
Phillips said: “I enjoyed my time at Riverview HS, as I thought it was a humbling experience to be a 3 year starting catcher for Coach Slater.” She added: “I’m grateful for the opportunity to go to St John’s River. It’s a growing program and the team is very welcoming and talented already. My goal is to transfer to a 4-year program one day and SJR will allow me to achieve that goal.” Phillips plans to study Health Science.
Legendary Riverview HS Head Softball Coach Angela Slater said this about Phillips: “She was one of our cornerstones. Dedicated, committed kid, who doesn’t miss…always there for conditioning, fall ball, who has her priorities set right. She did the grunt work for our team, and those are the kids you need in an athletic program.” Being a former JUCO player herself before transferring to USF, Slater likes the idea of the JUCO route for her players. “I think it is excellent for Jordan, as I think for most kids. JUCO programs allow kids to grow and develop on and off the field…and those programs have many benefits that families don’t know about until they are told about them.”
St John’s River State College Asst Coach Karla Powell can’t wait to have Phillips be apart of the Viking family. “She has a presence of being ready to compete each time she takes the field. Her softball IQ will make an immediate impact next year. Being a crafty LH hitter w/ a strong arm behind the plate, she’s always heads up and looking for the next play.”
