NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Recruiting Rules

It is important for potential prospects to know the the NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball Recruiting Rules. ¬†Athletes and coaches have certain restrictions when it comes to college basketball recruiting. ¬†Ensure your eligibility by following the NCAA recruiting rules.

As a Sophomore and Freshman in high school

Recruiting Tactic As a Sophomore and Freshman
Recruiting Material You may receive brochures for camps and questionnaires.
You can receive material June 15th after your sophomore year.
Telephone Calls You can call the coach at your own expense.
Coach can call you unlimited starting June 15 after your sophomore year.
Electronic Correspondence (i.e. texts, IM, email.) All forms of electronic correspondence are allowed starting June 15th AFTER your Sophomore Year
Off-Campus Contact Not Permitted
Official Visits Not Permitted
Unofficial Visits Unlimited – except during a dead period

As a Junior in High School

Recruiting Tactic As a Junior
Recruiting Material You can begin to receive recruiting material and information from the coach.
Telephone Calls Phone calls, texts and emails are unlimited between coach and student-athlete.
Electronic Correspondence (i.e. texts, IM, email.) All forms of electronic correspondence are allowed starting June 15th AFTER your Sophomore Year.
Correspondence must be private between athlete & coach.
Off-Campus Contact At prospect’s educational institution (other than during April Recruiting Period).
April Recruiting Period – contact at prospect’s educational institution or at the prospect’s residence.
Official Visits Allowed August 1st to the end of your Junior Year.
You may take 5 official visits during this period, but only 1 per school.
Unofficial Visits Unlimited – except during a dead period.

As a Senior in high school

Recruiting Tactic As a Senior
Recruiting Material You can receive material and information from the coach.
Telephone Calls Phone calls, texts and emails are unlimited between coach and student-athlete.
Electronic Correspondence (i.e. texts, IM, email.) All forms of electronic correspondence are allowed starting June 15th AFTER your Sophomore Year.
Correspondence must be private between athlete & coach.
Off-Campus Contact Allowed
Official Visits Allowed between end of your Junior Year and October 15th after your high school graduation.
You may take 5 official visits during this period, but only 1 per school.
Unofficial visits Unlimited – except during a dead period.

Other important information

  • College coaches have 130 evaluation days to recruit you during the academic year.
  • During your senior year a college coach cannot evaluate and/or contact you more than 7 times. Only three of those seven can be an off-campus contact.
  • During a contact period college coaches can make only one visit per week to your high school.
  • All communication prohibited during a certified event
