Two grown men dressed in Missouri black and gold wait in the corner of Leeâ€™s Summit High Schoolâ€™s gymnasium, wanting the same thing as two nearby little boys who grip their pens and game programs. Same goes for the brunette teen girls and other young men standing and holding up their baggy pants.
They all want the time and attention of Leeâ€™s Summit West senior basketball player Michael Dixon, who just finished scoring 35 points to lead his team to a Missouri Class 5 District 14 championship. Dixon, who will play in college at Missouri, finally walks out of the locker room, and his fan club inches closer.
Michael looks relaxed. He shakes hands with Missouri Tiger fans, has the little boys turn around so he can sign his name and No. 11 on their backs, and gives big body hugs to the girls. He makes them all feel special.
While Michael basks in the limelight, a 12-year-old boy stands a bit farther away. His hands are stuffed inside his jeans. He watches the high school superstarâ€™s every move.
His name is Jarred Dixon. Heâ€™s Michaelâ€™s brother and, more important, his best friend.
Tonight, Jarred will be watching Michael and his Leeâ€™s Summit West teammates play Grandview in a sectional playoff game at 6 p.m. at Staley High School. It is a matchup of the top two ranked teams in Missouriâ€™s biggest class â€
