Congratulations to former RecruitLook athlete, Erik Thomas, on his Player of the Year award in the Southland Conference. Erik helped guide his University of New Orleans Basketball teammates to a regular season conference title, and has them in a good position to make it back to the NCAA tournament since 1996.
Erik came to RecruitLook seeking help with his college recruitment. He was a classic example of getting overlooked at a smaller high school. Although he was the Florida High School 5A Player of the Year, college coaches weren’t ready to take a chance on him; coaches thought he needed to be tested against better competition.
Erik decided that the best way to prove he could play Division One basketball was to go the JUCO route, where he proved he was primed for D1 hoops — Erik won Louisiana Junior College Association Player of the Year and first-team All-Region 23 honors at Baton Rogue Community College.
More athletes need to consider JUCO if they are experiencing any of the JUCO myths. It has worked out great for Erik. Erik finished the regular season averaging 19.7 points per game, 7.9 rebounds per game, 2.3 assist per game, and a deserving Player of the Year award!
