South Georgia Tech. Coll.
South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) is a residential college located in southwest Georgia, teaching the latest educational programs of today. There are two campuses within the main college. The main college is located in Americus, Georgia, while the satellite campus located in Cordele, Georgia offers the same programs.
South Georgia Technical College is located in the heart of Americus, Georgia. Originally SGTC was Air force training facility during World War I and World War II. The facility was known at the time as Souther Air Field (Souther Field). In fact Charles A. Lindbergh bought his first plane; (a Jenny) from Souther Field. Lindbergh was the first to fly from New York to Paris nonstop in The Spirit of St. Louis in 1927. Initially in 1948 the school was named South Georgia Trade and Vocational School, until the phrase trade school dropped in 1963. After the change the school was identified as South Georgia Technical and Vocational School. Furthermore the school name changed once more as a result of 1988 a legislative act. Although the name did not become official until Governor Roy Barnes enacted the Educational Reform Bill on November 2, 2000. As of today SGTC offers many Associate degree programs ranging from aviation, auto repair, and dental hygiene. New growth and development has accrued since Sparky Reeves was appointed school President in 2004. Sparky Reeves is only the sixth person in the schools rich history to uphold such an honorable position.
Southwest Georgia Technical College is a public two-year technical college with the mission to provide learner-centered and high-quality services, courses, and programs through both distance and traditional delivery methods. These services, courses, and programs develop individual skills and abilitites, provide for intellectual and career development, and meet the needs of business and industry. Achievement of this mission promotes economic growth and development and improves the quality of life for individuals and the community.
To meet the workforce needs of our growing economy, South Georgia Tech must build strong partnerships with business and industry as well as individuals. The South Georgia Technical College Foundation was formed to strengthen these bonds, especially with the businesses that are the primary employers of its graduates. The Foundation also seeks to provide opportunities for more students to attend the college through scholarships and other forms of financial assistance. We play a key role in supporting the college in helping procure special equipment, upgrading physical facilities, and improving programs and recognition for South Georgia Tech.
