2019 Sunflower Showcase: Ty Berry scores 21, talks transfer to Sunrise & recruitment.

SHAWNEE, KANSAS— In a game for the ages that brought out over 20 plus college coaches and had the stands packed, Ty Berry was at his best. The intensity of the game was unmatched, and Berry knew it. “It was a battle for the city, I guess, and we came out and showed what we can do,” said Berry.

“We just had to keep applying pressure, get stops, and run the score up. Just keep running it up, that’s what we always say.”

KC Run GMC & Team KC Black were locked in a tight one until it kicked in for Berry to take control and put the game out of reach. With the Run GMC’s lead only being two points, Berry broke the game open with a 4-point play and was the defensive stalwart on the trip back down the court.  Their very next offensive possession, Berry stepped up and drilled a three in front of his defender’s face, letting his defender know what he was dealing with by saying a few words and showing him that he had the hot hand.

“I was just hot, I was like ‘He’s not going to get up, so I’m going to keep shooting.’ I was just feeling it I guess.”

Finishing with 21 points against Team KC Black and proved to be the guy they lean on the most to step up when they need it. Berry is coming fresh off a great weekend in Atlanta for the Under Armour Association Finals, and carried it over to this weekend at the Sunflower Showcase. “Yeah, Atlanta was good. We played great as a team and individually I played really well.”

He recently just announced he was going to be attending powerhouse Prep School Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kansas for his senior season. “I just wanted to make that move because I want to be playing against the best competition I can every day,” said Berry regarding his decision to transfer to Sunrise.

“I want to be pushed to be the best that I can be.”

Berry feels at peace with his decision to join Sunrise, “Yeah, it was a really long thought process but it’s over and I’m glad,” said Berry. Sunrise wasn’t the only prep school wanting him to be an addition to their roster as New Hampton Prep School in New Hampshire was a finalist for the talented guard. “New Hampton, those guys are good people too. But I just wanted to be closer to home and at Sunrise I can get the same thing done too.”

Berry’s recruitment is starting to heat up after the live period, “I’ve been hearing from the same schools who have offered, but I’m going to wait until after July to finalize some officials and get that underway.”

Berry has a bevy of offers from most Big Ten & Big 12 schools, but no school stands out for Berry as his recruitment is still wide open. Every school is relaying the same message, “Just have fun with it and choose what’s best for me.”
