It is important for potential prospects to know the the NCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball Recruiting Rules. Athletes and coaches have certain restrictions when it comes to college basketball recruiting. Ensure your eligibility by following the NCAA recruiting rules.

As a Sophomore in high school

Recruiting Material You can receive brochures about camps and questionnaires.
Telephone Calls You can call at your own expense.
College coach cannot call you
Off-Campus Contact Not Permitted
Official Visits Not Permitted
Unofficial Visits Unlimited

As a Junior in High School

Recruiting Tactic As a Junior
Recruiting Material You can receive material and information starting September 1st
Telephone Calls You can call a coach at your own expense.
College coaches can begin calling September 1st (unlimited calls).
Electronic Correspondence (i.e. texts, IM, email.) All forms of electronic correspondence are allowed starting September 1st of your Junior Year.
Correspondence must be private between athlete & coach.
Off-Campus Contact Beginning September 9th, must happen at prospect’s educational institution.
Official Visits Beginning Thursday following the NCAA women’s basketball championship game.

As a Senior in high school

Recruiting Material You can receive material and information from the coach.
Telephone Calls You can call a coach at your expense.
College coaches can begin calling September 1st (unlimited calls).
Electronic Correspondence (i.e. texts, IM, email.) All forms of electronic correspondence are allowed starting September 1st of your Junior Year.
Correspondence must be private between athlete & coach.
Off-Campus Contact Beginning September 9th, allowed at any location, subject to the recruiting calendar.
Official Visits Allowed, other than during dead periods or the July evaluation period.
You get one per college and a maximum of 5 for D1 schools and unlimited for D2, D3 and NAIA.

Other important information

    • College coaches have 112 evaluation days to recruit you during the academic year.
    • During your senior year a college coach cannot evaluate and/or contact you more than 7 times. Only three of those seven can be a contact.
    • During a contact period college coaches can make only one visit per week to your high school.
    • Evaluations at nonscholastic events and noninstitutional camps or clinics that occur on a Division 1 campus are prohibited.

Evaluation Period High school all-star games at the conclusion of the season are considered EVALUATION PERIODS, if the game takes place in the same state where the college coach is from.

(1)Evaluation Period (1) During four sanctioned AAU women’s events occurring between May 18th and June 14th selected by the coaching staff will be EVALUATION PERIODS.

  • Division 2 does not have any rules on the number of evaluations per student athletes.
  • College coaches cannot contact you on competition or practice days until your event is finished, and you are dismissed by the proper authority (like your high school coach or athletic director).
  • During a contact period college coaches can make only one visit per week to your high school.
