Each year college programs lose players due to graduation, injuries, transfers, and other issues. It is essential that the college coach recruit new players to fill the void. If not, the program could suffer and the coach could eventually lose his or her job. That’s why it’s so important for college coaches to restock with the best incoming high school talent.
With the pressure to win mounting coaches will use scouting services to assist them in the recruiting process. A coach spends his time in practice, at games, at radio and television appearances, booster functions, scouting opponents, recruiting, and trying to spend time with their families. So how does a college recruiter find new talent? A scouting service could be one way to discover new recruits.
Scouting services provide the coach with a foundation to make a judgment on potential recruits. The scouting service will look at athletic traits essential to the evaluation process, and then grade each recruit based on their findings. Some things the scouting services look at are: (football) 40-yard dash, vertical jump, bench press reps, (baseball) speed from home to first, bat speed, pitching velocity, (basketball) vertical jump, height, weight, wing-span. There is wide range of topics for each sport that college scouts gather information on.
There are two main scouting services in the recruiting market today. The first type does all the evaluating on their own and reports their findings back to the coaches. Those companies charge coaches for the information they gather. The college recruiter will then use this information during their evaluation of high school athletes. The second type is when the high school athletes pay the scouting service to find them the right college. Those companies ask the athletes a series of questions to determine the best colleges for them to target. The prices for such companies range from $500-$5000.
