Blog Entry: We were recently asked by an athlete how social media influenced his college recruiting. The landscape of high school recruiting is changing with the advancements of technology. Social media is accessible for every athlete and college coach practically 24/7; therefore, knowing how to best utilize social media to get recruited is advantageous. First let us explore facebook: Numerous college coaches nowadays have a facebook page, and they use their facebook to almost “spy” on potential recruits. Yes – they use it at as recruiting tool to connect with an athlete, but coaches are also looking deeper into your profile then you may think. Coaches are looking to see what kind of post you are making, or what sort of pictures you have on your profile. Therefore, it is not smart to post pictures or things you wouldn’t want your mother, father, or grandparent to see. As an athlete, you should also try to post your RecruitLook Blogs and videos to your facebook page for college coaches to view. That is a great way to get the communication started between you and a college scout. Now twitter: Many college coaches are using twitter to tweet out different recruiting news and information on their program. It is smart to follow coaches in your sport to get the latest updates. After you sign up for twitter then start to “follow” coaches. Make a “list” and put the coach under that list so you can easily find them when you need to mention them in a tweet. You can tweet your RecruitLook blogs and videos mentioning a coach to get them to notice you. Make sure when picking out your twitter handle that it is free of any profanity. If not, it shows bad character on your part. Also don’t have an avatar or a facebook profile picture that shows you partying or flipping off the camera. This will not help you get a coach to buy into your character and reputation. If you are an athlete or parent and would like more information on the college recruiting process then contact us here
