Blog Entry: What is the National Letter of Intent? The   National Letter of Intent   ( NLI ) is a document used to indicate a student athlete’s commitment to participating   NCAA   colleges and universities.  Once signed, this marks the end of the college recruiting process and prevents schools from contacting you further.  You have committed to a college in return for athletic financial aid from that institution.   What is the difference between NLI and a verbal commitment? National letter of intents mean you must attend the school you have signed with in order to receive financial aid.  NCAA rules forbid coaches from recruiting recruits further; these restrictions make it easier for the recruit and coach during the recruiting process.  Players know they will be receiving an athletic scholarship, while coaches have the security of the recruit attending their institution and not be swayed by another college coach.  By contrast, verbal commitments are nonbinding; recruits may change their verbal commitments at any time, and college scouts can continue to recruit a verbally committed recruit.
